I went to the job this morning with no complications. The shift began ok but went South on me in the 2nd half. I got my pay check and a 6/49 ticket for Saturday's $30M draw and up to my bank. So far today's holding out alright, except for a slight hic-cup with Pay Pall but I'm working on it.
I have this evening off and with no hockey or other distractions, I plan on reading "Pearl" and maybe even finnish the book off this weekend if all goes well.
Speaking about books, over there at Pat's I put my name in for 2 more book give-a-way's: Peter V. Brett's "The Warded man" and Col Buchanan's "Farlander." I like the cover of Farlander. It has a kind of Steampunk/Goth feel to it. I entered both contests. I hope I'm not un eligble for winning again because I won a book last November.
Tomorrow I'm in the office for a full 6 hours. That's alright the day goes by fast. It's just the last 2 hours that drag. Anyway, that's all for now.

Working through the work week
I'm just working out the week. I go to bed about 3am up about noon, read my book go through my email and blogs have lunch and off to work for 4 hours come home about 10pm and do my stuff before supper and read until about 3am or listen to YouTube music. That's about it, nothing spectacular.
Work went well, some new fellow asked if what I was reading was "The Space Wolf" omnibus. I think his name is Connor. He said he liked it and we talked about the book for awhile. That was kind of nice. I had no cards and a slow start to the shift. I pulled out of the hat $255 in sales on the night. Not great but I'll take it.
Anyway gang that's about all for now

Yeesh, what a week
More economic bad news on a smaller scale here in Edmonton/Calgary. Telus is closing down it’s 911 call center operations laying off 50 employees each in Calgary and Edmonton. I’m sure some of them will be applying at my place of employment. We’ve lost a lot of call center work here in Edmonton over the last 2-5 years.
Today is the anniversary of 9/11, or in other words the tragic incident of Tuesday, September 11th 2001. On this date 8 years ago marks the anniversary of bombing of the World Trade Center where terrorists took control of aircraft and slammed them into the twin towers causing thousands of deaths there and at the US Pentagon. This incident changed the world forever. I’m going to have an article on this in my “For what it’s worth,” section.
I’m still reading “The Space Wolves” Omnibus and just about closing in on the first book. William King is a good writer. This may be a bit of a spoiler but I’m finding that the book lacks dialogue between characters. I‘d say the book is about 20% dialogue and the rest description. I don’t know what‘s ahead in the second book Regnar‘s Claw but my guess is more of the same. I’m enjoying this book but I’ll be relieved when I’m done with it and at my reading rate should be 1st week in October.
The job goes ok. We’re doing CRF and a lot of people aren’t saying the disclaimer netting themselves more and larger sales. The new guy beside me speaks so low I could hardly hear him but he was getting sales after sales as well. I could hear the girl on the other side of me not saying the disclaimer getting large sales. I made a point of this to Jerry and he made sure people got the word.
Tonight, I’m in for my 5-8:30pm but I’m going in for Saturday. Before the cold weather sets in I’m going to talk to my Doctor and get my Saturdays off. I mean I’ve done it a lot of times before but I’m tired of getting up at 7am on a Saturday morning when it’s -20C for work. Being diabetic it’s hard on me.
Apparently Spider Robinson won’t be at our Pure Speculation event coming up October 2-3-4th. Seems his wife is under going chemo treatment. My heart goes out to them. I’ll still pop in as there could be other people I need to see there as well.

Today is a lame day for a Wednesday and not a lot is going on
at the moment. Anne's out of here for her 3pm start. It's my usual line up for me.
But I have a work related issue that needs to be addressed on the job. Most businesses pay out vacation pay. Since the place I work at pays weekly hence my vacation pay is paid out on a weekly basis. Right now it's at 6% of my weekly gross pay. I think it caps out at 8%. However, I have my vacation pay accrued every week. That means my company holds it back for me, like a bank account upon my request. It's a release form I have to fill out. I can take out as many "draws" as I want. Usually I do this twice a year, at the end of June and just around Christmas time. Last Christmas when I tried to take out my vacation pay I got a memo from head office saying there was an "overpayment" and so no vacation pay will be released. This kind of took me for a spin. Huh? I never saw any increase in my rate of pay since last June till December. Last time I took a draw was last June. I figured well, ok. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Then a few months back I heard that this happened to other people in the office as well. Some of them were saying I should do something about this. I thought, well lets see if they do this again and site an "overpayment" when I take out my vacation pay in June.
The thing is, there's no explanation as to where the overpayment came out from. Then my wife looked at my pay stub last week and discovered my vacation pay is not showing up on my pay cheque. it should show as a running balance. Uh-oh. I've been so worried about my job lately I was to timid to rock the boat and say something. Now that everything is more or less ok, I need to find out what's going on with this.
The first thing I'm going to do is contact Rob this afternoon if he hasn't left the office when I get there and say that my vacation pay is not showing up on my pay cheque. Could he ask HO what's going on? If a memo comes back saying again about an overpayment without an explanation, then I'm going to ask for a history of my "overpayment." Could they email Rob. If they don't do anything for say the rest of this month then I'll ask one more time with a push: Something like "Or James will bring this up with Alberta Employment Standards if this isn't resolved." AES is the labor board. Their lawyer's will most likely open proceedings to do an internal audit of my company and that could be a big headache they don't need. I need to be careful here as I'm in unfamiliar waters. What I think? HO is confusing my bonus money as an overpayment. last week for instance I was expecting $35 in bonus money. This is for things like CC sales etc. Imagine my surprise when I got $5. That kind of told me that it's HO fouling things up again. I asked Super to make sure that $30 gets on this cheque and he placed it on the attendance sheet. It sounds like they're trying to get rif of me. Force me to quit.
Tonight, is the Old Timer hockey game. or OTH as we call it. Odd how my wife got a couple of vouchers from her place of work. I know business trades ad space in the hockey programs and my wife's place of employment might be one of the partner companies.
Speaking of companies and such AIG as everyone knows is in the news again. Politicians are passing blame and pointing fingers. Basically they're showboating more then anything. Right now the banks need trust. If there's no trust, credit can't circulate. Trust is a two way street folks, it works both ways.
I'm still reading "The third Lynx." I'm really enjoying this book. I like books that are in first person. There are so few first person books these days.
Last night on Coast they had Gregg Braden on again. He's got a whack of YouTube videos on spiritualist like topics. He's a great speaker and a favorite on Coast.
Also, it seems that Robert J Sawyer is coming to Edmonton on one of his book tours promoting Wake. Most likely this will be at Audrey's again. The date will be Thursday April 23rd. I don't have a copy of Wake yet but he'll have a lot of them in hard copy on his table. I'm not a 100% sure he'll be at Audrey's but he was last time to promote Rollback a few years ago. I'll email him when I come home tonight and I'll have an answer most likely tomorrow.
We're still getting some cold weather around here. Too cold for Spring, which begins on Friday. But we're going to see a lot less of the -15C's and crap like that out here. By the end of march early April the snow should all be but gone.

Uggh, when
I’m in a hurry, jotting this stuff down after reading it again boy do I make spelling mistakes. That’s why I mention in the “Welcome block” about an editing disclaimer. I usually try and edit these blog posts latter. Especially if I’m in a hurry.
I went to bed at my usual 4am time this morning. I did a bsl reading at that time and it read 12. Not good. Around 2am my bsl was 14.2. My bsl reading is usually high over night anyway.
Today is Halloween and we here in Canada set our clocks back an hour this weekend. We used to do this 3 weeks ahead of the Americans but since last year we moved Daylight Savings time (in the Spring) back 3 weeks to March 9th. So now we have Halloween tonight and Saturday night Sunday morning we set the clocks back. Halloween is the last occasion of Summer/Fall and once we set the clocks back an hour, we’re heading officially into winter. Well by my reckoning at least. It makes for a short winter, only 4 months. In March here it begins to warm up, in theory.
Also this weekend in Calgary they are having their World Fantasy Convention. I’d love to go but the job thing and lack of funds holds me back from attending. Best I can do this weekend is to buy a book.
Also, there are a few Oiler games on TV this weekend I‘d like to catch. Saturday afternoon at 1pm and then again Sunday morning at 11am. Yeesh. I want to get up to watch the Sunday game and I’ll be able to see the first hour of the Saturday game on our last hour of the shift.
So tonight is the last Eskimo game. I think its at Commonwealth. A football game on a Halloween night no less. The last game of the season. Next week is the CFR Rodeo and that’s going to be for I think 8 days. It’s a big event for the City along with Farm Expo. But getting back to this evening, after work, I’m going to head over to Audrey’s and pick up a book. Hopefully I can get home before the game is over and get into Smackdown.
November isn’t as full as October. Sure we set our clocks back, I have step up night at the Lodge, We have Remembrance day Nov. 11th and other then that, November will be a lame kind of a month for me. I like months like this.
Anne and I decided not to go to the office (if there is one) Christmas party this year, my place of employment usually puts on. Christmas day itself is on a Thursday. I might take Thursday and Friday off. Well see. In December our rent goes up $70 to almost $900/month.
